On 18 November, over 100 staff and students attended the event on “The European Union and Palestine: Legal Obligations, Evolving Positions, and Humanitarian Dimensions”. It was an important moment of academic debate and exchange between legal scholars, practitioners and political scientists on the EU’s legal obligations and positions towards Palestine. The discussion underscored a critical question: will the EU overcome its hypocrisy to uphold international law and remain committed to justice?

A big thank you to the panelists, Dr Nimer Sultany (SOAS), Dr Polly Pallister-Wilkins (UvA), Dr Dimitris Bouris (UvA) and Daan de Grefte (European Legal Support Center), who participated in an engaging discussion about international law, international humanitarian law and the EU's responsibilities and obligations towards Palestine. The event was moderated by Miriam Heipertz who co-organised the event with Dr Bouris, with the support of ACELG and the ATHENA Jean Monnet Chair, ACES and ACIL.

Following the academic event at UvA, the legal discussions continued to a broader audience at Spui25 at the event "Israel before the Hague Courts: the Role of International Law in the Israeli-Palestinian Conflict"

Dr Nimer Sultany, Prof Sergey Vasiliev, and Prof Janne E. Nijman shared their expertise and legal insights, unpacking the recent cases before the ICJ and the ICC investigation and highlighting the emerging obligations for third countries. Once again Miriam Heipertz expertly moderated the discussion.
