European Biodiversity Law 

In her talk, Professor Peters will reassess the framework of European Biodiversity law and protection in the light of current earth system and biodiversity research. She will point to reasons, why the law needs further reappraisal. On a general level, Peters will attempt to argue why current conceptualizations of biodiversity need further reflection. And on a very specific level, she will argue that EU biodiversity law needs to adapt to current biodiversity research, which concentrates on the systemic relevance of species for a particular habitat. She will try to address possible entries of reform, which mitigate both aspects.

Prof. Birgit Peters studied law at the Humboldt University, Berlin, Trier University and King’s College London (Master's degree, LL.M.) with a focus on International and European law. As of November 2021, Prof. Peters is working with the German Federal Ministry of Environment, Nature Conservation, Nuclear Safety and Consumer Protection.
