In 2018 he received his PhD degree cum laude from the University of Amsterdam. His doctoral thesis 'Judging European Democracy' was awarded the Dissertation Prize of the Dutch Association of Constitutional Law and offers a systematic analysis of how we should assess the democratic legitimacy of the national constitutional courts' review of European law.
