Maiju’s research examines the role of courts in the enforcement of the EU’s procedural climate governance framework by national governments and EU institutions. Rather than concentrating on so-called ambition cases that challenge the adequacy of climate targets or laws themselves, she explores compliance with existing targets and obligations under the European Climate Law and the Governance Regulation. Her work addresses questions such as the role of EU courts in determining the boundaries between political and administrative discretion when implementing these laws.
During her time in Amsterdam, Maiju will work on her second article, which examines judicial oversight of the European Commission’s actions under the European Climate Law. Relatedly, she hopes to explore how the concept of ‘The Rule of Law in EU Climate Governance’ could serve as a theoretical foundation for her research. She looks forward to engaging in discussions on EU climate litigation and related themes with ACELG researchers and stakeholders, particularly within the project ‘Strategic Climate Litigation’s Direct and Indirect Consequences for Democracies,’ led by Professor Christina Eckes. She is also eager to follow broader discussions on topical EU law issues at ACELG.
Maiju holds a master’s degree in law from the University of Helsinki. At UEF, she has, among other roles, assisted the applicant NGOs in the Finnish climate cases I and II. Prior to joining academia, she worked on EU policy matters in Helsinki and Brussels.
