Gesche Ripken is a PhD researcher in her second year at the research training group DynamInt, Humboldt-Universität Berlin. She is joining ACELG as a visiting researcher for September and October 2024. Gesche’s research relates to the use of economic analysis in European competition law and its impact on antitrust federalism in the EU.

Overall, the study analyses how recent changes in the approach to economics in competition law will affect the system of European competition authorities and its inherent balancing act between autonomy and coherence.

During her stay, Gesche will focus on mapping out different notions of federalism/multi-level governance definitions and then apply those findings to the field of competition law. She will also aim to develop an approach to systematically analyse the use of economic methods by national competition authorities.

After graduating from Bucerius Law School, Hamburg, and passing the First German State Examination, Gesche obtained LL.M. degrees from Haifa University, Gent University, and Aix-Marseille University as part of the European Master of Law and Economics (EMLE) program. She completed a two-year clerkship as part of the Second German State Examination before starting her position as a PhD researcher at DynamInt.
