In early June, Dr Maria Weimer, together with Jonathan Zeitlin and Joanne Scott, organised a workshop to discuss the latest developments in the implementation of the EU Deforestation Regulation (EUDR). The workshop brought together academic researchers, policy practitioners, and civil society to discuss challenges, opportunities, and open questions around the EUDR and its implementation.

The EU Deforestation Regulation (EUDR), adopted in May 2023, is an ambitious and innovative measure aimed at greening the Union’s supply chains and mitigating climate change beyond its borders. The EUDR prohibits operators from placing a series of major agricultural commodities on the EU market if they have been produced on recently deforested land and imposes mandatory due diligence obligations on firms trading such products in Europe.

The workshop covered four broad topics:

  • the state of implementation,
  • the EUDR in the global economic context,
  • perspectives on the EUDR from different stakeholders,
  • the legitimacy and effectiveness of the EUDR.

Our thanks to Katharina Weber for providing these summary notes from the two days.
