On 14 May, Associate Professor Kati Cseres organised a symposium to mark the 20 years that had passed since ten new Member States joined the EU. Eight of the new members were from Central and Eastern Europe and the “big bang” enlargement was the largest in terms of the number of new states and population in the history of the EU.

The keynote speaker was László Andor, former Commissioner for Employment, Social Affairs and Inclusion (2010-2014) and currently FEPS Secretary General. He focused on single market imbalances, gradualism and incompleteness, as well as the future of enlargement. You can read his full speech on the link below.

We also wish to thank all the other speakers and participants for their contributions. In particular, Blerta Begisholli, Prishtina Insight; René van Hell, former ambassador of the Netherlands to Hungary; Narin Idriz , Asser Instituut; Beti Jaceva, current ambassador of North Macedonia to the Netherlands and Ferenc Laczo, Maastricht University
