Tiziana Melchiorre is Marie Skłodowska-Curie Fellow at the University of Amsterdam. Her project is titled ‘The European Union in the Arctic’ (EURARCTIKA). The aim of the project is investigating which legal and geopolitical instruments the European Union (EU) could use in order to contribute to the protection of the Arctic environment.
The European Union has a distinct negative impact on the Arctic environment with its greenhouse gases and black carbon emissions while environmental challenges and economic opportunities in the Arctic have significant repercussions on the life of European citizens for generations to come. Given the urgency of the protection of the Arctic environment and the relevance of the EU as an Arctic actor, EURARCTIKA analyses the EU’s geopolitical and economic interests in the Arctic while investigating the environmental legal regime of the region and the contribution that the EU might give to its effectiveness from a legal and geopolitical perspective.
EURARCTIKA is financed by the European Commission within the framework of the Marie Skłodowska-Curie Fellowship Actions. It runs from the 1st of September 2020 until the 31st of August 2022.
