With the arrival of four new junior researchers in 2012, ACELG now is home to 14 Ph.D. students. The new arrivals are Enrico Partiti, Chris Koedooder, Maarten Hillebrandt and Nik de Boer.

Enrico is working on sustainability standards and trade law in the EU and WTO, Chris is working on the Monetary Union and its external representation, Maarten on transparency in the Council and Nik researches the normative relation between national and European fundamental rights standards.

The PhD studies can mostly be grouped around 3 themes: EU procedural law (Vigjilenca Abazi, Maarten Hillebrandt, Sara Pernuš and Eljalill Tauschinsky), the EU constitutional structure (Kathalijne Buitenweg, Aart Loubert, Nik de Boer and Anniek de Ruijter), EU and the outside world (Chris Koedooder, Enrico Partiti, Catharina Koops) with additionally Katja Swider working on the determination of statelessness in a comparative perspective and Ana Ramalho researching EU Competences in the field of Copyright law.

Addtionally, Michael Frese has successfully defended his doctoral dissertation entitled 'Sanctions in EU Competition Law. Principles and Practice' on 22 November 2012.
