The European Parliament’s Quest for Representative Autonomy

PhD defence Kathalijne Buitenweg

23Sept2016 11:00 - 12:00

On 23 September, Kathalijne Buitenweg defends her doctoral dissertation entitled The European Parliament’s Quest for Representative Autonomy. The event is public, attendance is free.

In 2009 the German Federal Constitutional Court judged that the European Parliament represents the populations of the individual member states and not the citizens of the European Union as a whole. Kathalijne Buitenweg argues that this judgement ignored crucial elements of the European Parliament’s nature, brushing aside important rules that determine how members of the European Parliament can carry out their representative mandate, and how they can present themselves to their electorate.

Kathalijne Buitenweg's PhD research has been supervised by Prof. Deirdre Curtin and Prof. Tom Eijsbouts.
