In response to the recent 2007-2009 financial crisis affecting Europe in 2010 as a sovereign debt annex banking crisis, a number of regulatory and additional alternative economic governance mechanisms have been proposed or adopted. Professor Smits takes us through some of the most salient legal developments in EU economic governance which would result from the ideas of the Taskforce headed by EU President Van Rompuy and from the legislative proposals of the Commission, while also touching upon the increased powers of EU executive agencies in the area of financial sector supervision (post-Delarosière.
Professor René Smits is Professor of the Law of Economic and Monetary Union at the University of Amsterdam and Chief Legal Counsel at the Netherlands Competition Authority.
