ACELG Seminar: Judicially-Driven Integration in the Area of Freedom, Security and Justice?

Dr. Alicia Hinarejos

15June2010 13:00 - 14:00

Tuesday, 15 June 2010, 13.00 - 14.00 University of Amsterdam, Faculty of Law, room E 1.08

Dr. Alicia Hinarejos is British Academy Postdoctoral Fellow at the Faculty of Law, University of Oxford, and Assistant Professor at McGill University.

During her presentation, Alicia Hinarejos will venture a prediction as to the future role of the European Court of Justice in an area of EU activity, the Area of Freedom, Security and Justice (AFSJ). Until recently, judicial control was limited in this area; finally, in December 2009, the Treaty of Lisbon granted the Court of Justice full jurisdiction. Her question is whether this will result in rapid judicially-driven integration in this area, similarly to what happened in the EC Single Market. She answers this question in the negative, after comparing the type of integration pursued and the role of individuals in both the AFSJ and the Single Market.
